Led by Lisa Smith, this writing workshop is based off of the teachings of Natalie Goldberg. Automatic Writing practice, like meditation, is a way to come to know and accept our own minds. Meditation lets us see the restless nature of our minds. We catch ourselves thinking or feeling or thinking about what we're feeling, and we come back to the breath. Meditation helps us recognize how "not real" our thoughts and feelings are. We learn to notice them, let them go, and come back to the breath. Writing practice lets us see the layers within layers of our minds. It lets us see that our first thoughts aren't usually our truest thoughts. Those first thoughts might be what we've been conditioned to think or believe. In writing practice, we try to drop down below those surface thoughts to explore what's true for each of us. We do this by simply keeping our pen moving across a page in a notebook. We stop editing ourselves, stop saying what we think we should say and allow ourselves to hear and accept whatever it is we really think or feel in that moment.
The class will be held the first Saturday of every month beginning January 6th from 1:30pm-3pm and begins with a 10 minute meditation followed by 2-3 timed 10 minute writings. Sharing and discussions afterwards are optional.
